Viewed from the slopes of Foel Penycastell, spoil heaps formed during the years of coal mining at the Afan Valley colliery which closed in 1966. The lower two of the heaps in the photograph lie in grid square SS8495; the higher two in SS8494. The spoil heaps are also seen in [[1495525]] and [[14
