Point of Ayr Colliery was the last deep pit in North East Wales to close on 23 August 1996, ending over 100 years of mining here. The workings extended far out under the sea, around 1000 feet below sea level. By 1953 the mine employed 738 men and produced 213,000 tons of coal each year. 35 pit ponie
