Fort Barrancas

In 1821 the US Navy selected Pensacola Bay as the site for a US Navy yard. US Army Engineers made plans for the construction of new harbor defensese on the barrancas. The Spanish water battery was improved and Fort Barrancas built over the ruins of Fort San Carlos between 1839 and 1844. The fort saw action during Civil War. Until 1947, used as Coast ARtillery training area, then declared surpl us.
