Die Insel Poel [pøːl] liegt rund 10 km nördlich von Wismar in der Wismarer Bucht am Südrand der Ostsee. Von Süden her schneidet eine Bucht tief in die rund 37 km² große Insel ein, an deren nördlichem Ende das größte Dorf der Insel, Kirchdorf, liegt.
