Much of the summit has been removed by quarrying the volcanic rock, a type of gabbro, that was intruded into the surrounding sandstone. The quarry destroyed a hill fort, leaving only some of the rampart and house platforms by the time the quarry closed in 1987 - for archaeological details please see
